Is That Even Legal? | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST | 0.3 CEUs PS/Legal
Presenter: Carie Barrett, BEI Master & Court, RID CI/CT
This workshop explores interpreting situations that may carry legal implications — even when they do not occur in traditional courtroom settings. Participants will examine how legal risk can arise in medical, educational, workplace, investigative, and community environments, and discuss the ethical considerations involved in those assignments. Using the RID Code of Professional Conduct as a framework, interpreters will analyze professional boundaries, decision-making processes, and potential areas of legal exposure in their current practice. Participants will leave with practical strategies, relevant legal knowledge, and a personalized plan for continued professional growth in legally sensitive interpreting environments.
Evidence & the Legal Interpreter | 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM EST |
0.3 CEUs PS/Legal

Participants will explore how interpreted communication becomes part of the evidentiary record during interviews, sworn statements, depositions, and courtroom proceedings. The session focuses on the skills required for evidentiary assignments, including accuracy, attention to detail, register control, memory retention, and effective consecutive interpreting techniques. Through guided discussion and applied examples, participants will analyze how interpreter decisions can impact evidentiary integrity.
