    Is That Even Legal? | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST | 0.3 CEUs PS/Legal

Presenter: Carie Barrett, BEI Master & Court, RID CI/CT

This workshop explores interpreting situations that may carry legal implications — even when they do not occur in traditional courtroom settings. Participants will examine how legal risk can arise in medical, educational, workplace, investigative, and community environments, and discuss the ethical considerations involved in those assignments. Using the RID Code of Professional Conduct as a framework, interpreters will analyze professional boundaries, decision-making processes, and potential areas of legal exposure in their current practice. Participants will leave with practical strategies, relevant legal knowledge, and a personalized plan for continued professional growth in legally sensitive interpreting environments.

    Evidence & the Legal Interpreter | 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM EST |

    0.3 CEUs PS/Legal

Presenter: Carie Barrett, BEI Master & Court, RID CI/CT

This workshop examines the interpreter’s role when evidence is collected and

presented in legal settings. Participants will explore how interpreted communication becomes part of the evidentiary record during interviews, sworn statements, depositions, and courtroom proceedings. The session focuses on the skills required for evidentiary assignments, including accuracy, attention to detail, register control, memory retention, and effective consecutive interpreting techniques. Through guided discussion and applied examples, participants will analyze how interpreter decisions can impact evidentiary integrity. Workshop Description

This workshop is designed for interpreters who work in — or anticipate working in — any setting where Deaf–Hearing interpreter teams are utilized. The frameworks, communication strategies, boundary-setting tools, and collaborative models explored in this session are applicable across medical, mental health, educational, community, and other complex environments that rely on effective CDI/CHI teaming. Using legal settings as a primary lens, participants will examine how complete Deaf–Hearing teams function in high-stakes environments. The workshop explores roles and responsibilities, power dynamics, ethical decision-making, and strategies for pre-assignment planning, in-the-moment coordination, and post-assignment debriefing.

While legal scenarios will be heavily featured, interpreters do not need to be legal specialists — nor aspire to become legal interpreters — to benefit. Participants will leave with transferable skills to strengthen collaboration, advocate for appropriate team structures, and navigate professional dynamics with clarity and confidence in any setting that utilizes CDI/HI teams.

    Full-Day On-Site benefits

In addition to the foundational content above, onsite participants continue after lunch with extended application and guided practice. The afternoon portion includes scenario analysis, ethical problem-solving, and skill-building exercises designed to deepen collaborative decision-making and strengthen real-time team coordination. This extended format allows participants to move beyond discussion into applied practice within a supported learning environment.
